This volume aims to serve as a comprehensive resource that covers both research methodological and
content overviews of selected topics in applied linguistics research, particularly those relevant to
language learning and teaching. It aims to provide accessible, manageable and practical guidance for
people new to research as well as for those who wish to expand their knowledge of other research
methodologies.
The book is divided into two parts: (1) approaches and methods and (2) research areas. We have
done this so that readers can see specific examples of research methods as they have been applied in
the field of applied linguistics. It was not, unfortunately, possible for us to include everything about
applied linguistics research in the one volume. We have therefore selected research approaches and
methods that have been frequently adopted in recent years. We have also chosen topics in applied
linguistics that have been frequently researched. Much of what we cover in this volume, then, is more
or less relevant to applications to language teaching and learning, although other areas are touched on
as well
